Segway’s Project PUMA

Monday 13th April, 2009

This is a really cool video about Segway's Puma project. A 2 seater segway. Clever advancement of their original product to carry 2 seated passengers.

All these electric cars/segway's are great but how do we get traction, (pardon the pun),  and get them main stream ? The problem seems to be ALWAYS the power cell (and corporate motivation). But the solution to the power cells seems simple to me. All these electric cars should be designed with standardised "hot-swap" power cells, which is consistent across makers. Simply drive into a service station and swap them. Stuck out on the road ? Get one delivered, most people are with NRMA/RACQ/AAA or what ever. Ahh.. but I'm getting someone elses power cell when I swap it ? Well, when you buy one of these electric car/devices, you own everything except the power cell, effectively you are "borrowing" it.

So you pay (hopefully) a small fee monthly to have the battery, but you can swap them as many times as you need, and as the technology improves all you notice is a longer drive as the power cells are standardised across makers. Re-charging the battery costs almost nothing, so this fee should be more than offset by savings of electricity. Now the other problem is getting them motivated... Thinking about it now, until the car makers actually sit down and work this sorta stuff out, I doubt it's ever gonna happen until a car maker is threatened with bankruptcy... Hey.. isn't that happening now ?
