Australian Influence in Google
Monday 10th April, 2006Ori Allon studying
a Comp. Sci. Phd at UNSWUniversity
of New South Wales has had the rights of an advanced
text search engine algorithm purchased by Google. The algorithm itself
will remain the property of the university but it looks like Ori has packed
his bags and is already enjoying the spring air in Mountain View California.
I had believed that the intellectual "gold rush" was finished in the internet world. But anytime there is hype there is always money sloshing around to be had. The era of the "garage factorIs alot like terrorism, where one person can transform the planet, (but in this case it's transform the planet in a good way)", I think is fading, as this transaction involves the university which is nothing like a garage... But IT companies out there in the lead must remain vigilant to threats like this, and predictably they will do a pre-emptive strike by opening their cheque books, (even if the technology they buy is never used, better "I have it than anyone else").
