Hawaii comes to Coogee

Monday 10th April, 2006
A "30 year" swell hit Sydney shores over the weekend. This is the second big swell to hit Sydney beaches in as many weeks. The first was a result from ex-Cyclone Larry that hit 2 weeks ago in North Queensland kicking up the swell all the way down the coast. This one is the result of weather conditions off New Zealand and it's far-and-away bigger than the Larry's "swell" effort. Some beaches reporting 9 metres. Still some geniuses ignored the warnings and went out. Cronulla are just "attention wh_res", the record for most rescues in 90 minutes was won by Cronulla, they'll do anything to get in the paper these days.

"Many swimmers ignored the warnings, and lifesaving clubs reported 15 rescues, including eight in 90 minutes at Cronulla."

Below is a photo of the swell at Coogee. Beaches up and down Sydney and regional areas were closed for most of the weekend. Surfers were towed out on Jet Ski's to catch these monsters.
